<image:caption>Somewhere between awake and asleep, you are summoned to receive a special message from a forgotten old friend. Using a delicate physical environment, a sonic soundscape, and an unexpected use of technology, participants are invited to centre themselves within a dreamscape in which they possess extraordinary powers. An immersive and solitary experience, Good Things to Do is a meditation on goodness, generosity, and the struggle to stay soft in a world that asks us to be hard. <image:title>The Chop - Playing Fields</image:title>
<image:caption>Playing Fields explores the fraught subject of land through a youth-driven, outdoor, participatory sound performance. Using sport as our entry point, our real focus is on where the game takes place - the field itself. This immersive and transportable show is based on a series of interviews with youth (ages 13-16) from 6-8 different rural and urban communities about a field they have a relationship to. Co-Artistic Directors Anita Rochon & Emelia Symington Fedy are excited to be collaborating on this newest work-in-development with sound designer Nancy Tam. <image:title>The Chop - KISMET, things have changed</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2009, four artists in their late 20’s set out across Canada to interview one hundred people, aged 1 to 100, about their experiences and beliefs around fate and destiny. What they discovered on the road - stories of mystery, joy and endurance - became the anchor for a compelling and intimate show that blends verbatim interviews with the experience of the travellers. Ten years later, the same team, now in their late 30’s, attempts to find and re-connect with the surviving 100 people. How has the world changed? How have they? <image:caption>Take one part master storyteller Ivan Coyote and one part award-winning Swedish/Canadian songwriter Sarah MacDougall, and a generous helping of frozen Yukon landscape. Add a kind of homage to an old-time live local call-in buy-and-sell radio show where you can trade a used baby crib for a freezer full of moose meat. Exchange a skidoo helmet for a cord of wood, and liquidate your kayaks in case of pending divorce. Part song, part story, part peeling back of the hearts behind what is for sale in a northern town and the real story of what we are all looking for. <image:caption>Out of This Blue is an eclectic selection of the songs and stories that emerged from Ivan Coyote and Sarah MacDougall during the pandemic. Inspired by having time to watch the garden turn green in the spring and flower and wilt, infused with the longing and loss that social isolation has brought to all of our lives, and touching on matters of the heart that have always resonated for both of these artists, Out of This Blue is an homage to family, friendship, mortality, and the ability of writing and music to connect us all. <image:title>Neworld Theatre - Clean/Espejos</image:title>
<image:caption>Developed during her time as the Urjo Kareda Resident Artist at Tarragon Theatre, Clean/Espejos is a stunning, shocking, and surprisingly funny new work by Siminovitch Prize Protégé Playwright Christine Quintana. The lives of two women from very different worlds collide in the illusionary paradise of a Mexican resort. Adriana, a hotel floor manager reeling from a family loss, has a chance encounter with Sarah, a Canadian wedding guest with a long-held traumatic secret—when their worlds collide on a fateful rainy night, both women are forced to face their past and all that they’ve tried to keep hidden. Clean/Espejos intimately explores different perspectives of female solidarity, secrets, and survival across two languages. Clean/Espejos is a fully bilingual production performed in Spanish and English with dynamic surtitles throughout. <image:title>Neworld Theatre - The Boy in the Moon</image:title>
<image:caption>Written by Emil Sher, and based on Canadian journalist Ian Brown’s memoir of life with his son, The Boy in the Moon tells a deeply moving story about a family raising a child with a severe disability. Ian and Johanna Schneller’s son, Walker, was born with a rare genetic disorder, Cardiofaciocutaneous (CFC) syndrome. It made him unable to talk, eat properly, or take care of himself. The family must face complex issues most of us do our very best to avoid. The Boy in the Moon is a story of pain and beauty that asks vital questions about family, frailty, and the values we ascribe to human lives—our own, and those around us. <image:title>Hong Kong Exile - In development: was it the smell of solitude</image:title>
<image:caption>was it the smell of solitude is Hong Kong Exile’s newest large-scale multimedia performance project led by choreographer Natalie Tin Yin Gan and currently in working phase. Featuring fourteen performers, fog, powder, and intricate light choreography, solitude investigates Chinese funerary and ancestral tradition in a contemporary digital era. How do these performances around the afterlife intersect and communicate with the diasporic experience and imagination today? Through attempted ritual, object duets, and rhythmic dance compositions, solitude maps the transitions of grief, honour, and evolution. It shares stories that range from the profound to the profane, reckoning with the ever-shifting contradictions of the diasporic experience. Format: Live in person</image:caption>
